The method

How I rate the gear

Every score here comes from months of real use, not a spec sheet. Here's what the number means, and what a pick has to survive to get one.

What the number actually means

9 – 10 Buy it now
I use it daily, and if it broke tomorrow I'd order the same thing again that afternoon.
7 – 8 Strong pick
Very good at the job, with one trade-off you should know about before you spend.
5 – 6 Situational
Right for a specific person or a specific budget, wrong for most people. I'll tell you which one you are.
Below 5 Not listed
If it scored here it wouldn't be on the site at all. I don't pad the list to fill a category.

What goes into the number

01

Build that lasts

How it holds up after months, not how it feels in the first hour out of the box. Almost everything feels good in the first hour.

02

Call-readiness

Does it behave on a live call? Quiet clicks, no focus hunting, no fan noise, light that doesn't make you look ill. For a lot of this gear, that's the whole job.

03

Comfort at hour six

A bad mouse or a screen that sits too low doesn't hurt at nine in the morning. It hurts at four.

04

Value for the money

Price against what you actually get out of it. A cheaper pick that does ninety percent of the job usually wins.

The month-three test

Nothing gets a score before month three.

A laptop stand that wobbles. A keyboard that's loud on a hot mic. A webcam that hunts for focus in the middle of a sentence. None of that turns up in a ten-minute review, because at ten minutes everything is still on its best behavior. It turns up in month three. Everything on this site has been my daily driver long enough to find the flaws, through travel and through the kind of long demo where gear either disappears into the work or starts to annoy you. If it made the list, it made it past month three.

The money rule

A commission never moves a pick.

Some links here earn a commission, and that changes nothing about the scores. I buy this gear with my own money, no brand pays for a placement or a rating, and a higher commission has never moved a pick up the list. When something better comes along, the old pick comes down and the reason goes in its place. The only test that's ever mattered is whether I'd spend my own money on it again.
